Bird Rave Landscape

MISS HIGH LEG KICK presents:
Bird Rave Landscape is an online video work inspired by classic rave music, bird watching and changing landscapes. It takes the form of a “dancefloor ornithology” performance by Miss High Leg Kick in three films, set in three different landscapes, of three different ‘raving’ birds.

"I chose three landscapes within five minutes’ walk of each other. This was partly because I have had to drastically slow down while recovering from Covid. In my quest to find the perfect representations of rural, suburban and urban landscape, I realized that I didn’t actually have to look very far from home to find compelling views.
Bird Rave Landscape is inspired by the birdwatching and nature observation I was doing during lockdown and ever since. The world outside my window became my lockdown landscape - which got increasingly more interesting as time went on and I learnt more about birds and slowing down to appreciate my immediate surroundings (whilst listening to Pacific State!).
Live artist Steve Nice and I danced to rave music in our heads. There are two versions of each landscape; with music (favourite early rave tracks which sampled bird song) and no music (just the natural soundscape). I shot the films in one continuous take with a long landscape in mind - to simulate the experience of birdwatching from a bird hide. Children might like to count how many times we (the birds) appear in and out of the landscape and write the tallies on the accompanying Bird Rave log sheets."
