Early in 2019 we launched ‘Greening Stoke’ a project to transform the town centre of Stoke with quirky displays of flowers and plants created and installed by the people who live and work in the town, supported by the Big Lottery Fund.
Greening Stoke involved groups and individuals in planning and shaping ideas for planting, upcycling containers, choosing locations and which seeds to plant to bring vibrant colour and fresh green foliage around the streets of Stoke.
Flower and fruit seeds were planted in and containers made from upcycled objects such as colanders, handbags or old car wheels, and secured on walls and alongside doorways and open spaces around the town.
During that summer workshops were run in different venues showing people how to create outdoor containers for plants using discarded and found objects e.g. colanders, handbags, food cans, old tyres, etc. learn about seeds, planting and nurturing learn how to fix displays in appropriate and safe ways, including gaining relevant permissions.
Lots of local people, schools, groups, individuals, small businesses got involved and some made their own planters too!
Since that first project in 2019 we have developed Greening Stoke in response to the enthusiastic engagement of local people and groups. We have taken Greening Stoke into hospitals and heritage rennovation projects and we have developed the Greening Stoke Allotment to complement Art Stop, our workshop base in the centre of Stoke.

PLOT 33 - GREENING STOKE ALLOTMENT
In January 2021 we took on an allotment at Richmond Street Allotments in Stoke. We'll be sharing our progress on our new blog site.
During 2022 and 2023 we have developed the site, adding an artist-built reclaimed shed, a compost toilet and supporting the Richmond Street Allotment committee to secure funding to make the community hut more accessible. We have hosted Seed Swaps and Plant Swaps and held workshops for groups including Wonder Women, and Amity Hub and offered activities for the Social Prescribing scheme. We have loved welcoming others to join in our gardening-mixed-with-creative-activites. Right: Pictures from the early days
